SPF, which is an acronym for Sender Policy Framework, is an email security system, that is designed to verify if an e-mail message was sent by an authorized server. Using SPF protection for a domain name will prevent the counterfeiting of email addresses created with the domain. In layman's terms: enabling this attribute for a domain makes a specific record in the Domain Name System (DNS) that contains the IP addresses of the servers that are permitted to send email messages from mailboxes under the domain. When this record propagates worldwide, it will exist on all of the DNS servers that direct the Internet traffic. When a new e-mail message is sent, the first DNS server it uses verifies if it originates from an authorized server. When it does, it's sent to the destination address, however when it doesn't originate from a server indexed in the SPF record for the particular domain, it's discarded. Thus nobody will mask an email address then make it look as if you are sending spam messages. This method is also known as email spoofing.

SPF Protection in Cloud Web Hosting

When you host your domain names in a cloud web hosting account on our end and we handle the email addresses for them, you'll be able to activate SPF protection for them with several clicks in your Hepsia Control Panel. The service can be found in a separate section where you can view which domains are currently secured. For the ones that aren't, you'll be able to enable the SPF protection solution and manage various things in the process - the hostnames of the mail servers that are allowed to send messages from your e-mail addresses, the IPv4 and IPv6 addresses of these servers, and to create a rule that messages can be sent only if your domain names have our MX records. The last mentioned option is the most secure one, but it can be used if we handle the emails for your domains and you are not using a different email service provider. The newly generated records will propagate within 24 hours and nobody will be able to fake the FROM field in an e-mail by using your addresses.

SPF Protection in Semi-dedicated Servers

If you have a semi-dedicated server account with us, you will be able to protect your emails by enabling the SPF security service for any domain in the account with just a few clicks. This can be done in the Emails section of the Hepsia Control Panel that comes with the semi-dedicated accounts and even in case you have no previous practical experience with these matters, you won't have any kind of troubles to enable the protection. Everything that you will need to do is to select a domain from a drop-down list and after that type the mail server hostname and IPv4 or IPv6 address. The moment the new record propagates, messages from your e-mail addresses will be sent globally only if they were sent from that specific server. In case your e-mail addresses are handled by our company and not by some third-party supplier, you'll also be able to activate an option for email messages to be sent only if the domain includes our MX records and the aforementioned would be the safest option.
